The question is not whether ChatGPT can sell ads. The question is whether Monday is a sandbox or an inventory date.

Monday is not a test.

On August 19, Search Engine Land reported that ChatGPT Ads will expand to 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria (Search Engine Land). Digiday dated the start Monday, August 24, and named Publicis, Omnicom, WPP, Havas, Dentsu, and MediaPlus among the launch agencies (Digiday).

Ads stay on Free and Go. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise stay ad-free.

That is a calendar. It is not a lab.

The Door Is An Agency, Not A Button

Advertisers do not get a self-serve console on day one. Search Engine Land reported that campaigns run through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team, agency partners, and technology partners, with Ads Manager expected later this summer (Search Engine Land).

If your European plan assumes a junior buyer can open a tab on Monday and learn the channel, the plan is already wrong.

Name the person who is allowed to spend. Name the agency that can place it. Name the conversion you will believe if the platform click is flattering.

The Audience Is Not Your Customer File

The people who see these units are the people who have not paid to remove them.

That is a useful split. It is also a targeting constraint. Personalized targeting in Europe still sits under GDPR consent. OpenAI says ads are labeled, kept separate from answers, and do not receive the user's conversation (Search Engine Land).

Believe the separation until you can audit it. Do not brief creative as if you were writing into the thread.

The job of the unit is to be useful when someone is deciding to act. A clever interruption next to an answer is still an interruption.

The Operating Date Is August 24

OpenAI began U.S. testing in February and has since added eight markets. Search Engine Land called 31 European countries the largest geographic expansion so far, and said tens of thousands of marketers have already advertised on ChatGPT (Search Engine Land).

We already wrote, in July, that a new answer box with no reliable benchmark is a ring-fenced experiment. That still holds for measurement.

What changed is the clock. Monday is when inventory turns on in those 31 markets. A start date is not permission to scale. It is permission to decide the lists before the first screenshot.

Who buys. What creative is allowed next to an answer. Which first-party outcome counts.

If those three lines are blank on Sunday night, Monday is not a launch. It is a leak.
